Its about time I added some more images to the blog as I've been busy working as a kayak guide this year in the beautiful Pembrokeshire nation park.
I still work as a photographer but only part time. The passion is still there though :)

Snowing Around...

Not strictly work, more folly. As a band of heavy snow passed overnight I knew some top doggy pics would be on for the morrow so it was off to my Mums to take the pooches walkie's.
It was harder than expected too as the very low contrast lighting rendered the auto focus useless & had me manually focussing on rapidly moving subjects!
Well I do like a challenge :)

It wonderful to have beautiful images of your four legged friends, if you would like some images of your pets then please get in touch.

The Cute Shoot...

A quick preview from a fun shoot at Ogmore beach earlier. I'm only back in the UK for three days to shoot a wedding tomorrow so I'm quite chuffed to have fitted this job in too. Wasn't hard either as Ella was an absolute star :)

Ellie & Rachaels Pre Shoot...

Another fab photo shoot on the beach. What a great way to spend the weekend :)

Controlled Chaos At The Beach...

Yep, controlled chaos, that's how I'd describe a photo shoot involving kids. Thankfully these two, three if you include Dad were fab to work with :)

Engagement Shoots Revealed...

So what is the Engagement shoot or Pre shoot as its also known?

well ultimately its meant to be FUN & a chance to get to know my clients & for them to get to know me.

I hate having my picture taken & I'm sure I'm not in a minority so photographers like myself use the pre shoot to prepare our clients for their big day & to show them that having there picture taken is a chance to enjoy themselves & let there hair down.
So where do you go for your pre shoot?
Looking through my hard drive for images to use in this article I've noticed that my best images are the ones where the client chooses the location. Sure it adds more pressure & makes me work harder but thats something I LOVE :)

I encourage clients to choose a location or to give me a brief to find one for them like the image above.
Left to decide for myself I will regularly use a  lovely beach in Barry & its served me well over the years, the relaxed atmosphere of the seaside certainly helps.
So is it a money making scam?
OF COURSE IT IS!
The pre shoots that I offer are free but its also an opportunity to make some print sales or a disc of images, though ultimately it still comes back to fun.

And finally lets not forget that engagements & wedding are very special times in our lives, so wouldn't it be wonderful to have some magical images to remember them by?

Editing,(unravelling The Myth)...

 So what is image editing?

The truth is it varies from photographer to photographer. Personally I prefer to approach an image with the intent of perfecting the lighting & exposure to minimise any post image editing. I set my exposures manually to control & create the image within my mind.

Other photographers just snap away in auto & correct the images in Photoshop or similar later. I wont say that this approach is inferior as the images can be just as beautiful but this approach can have an effect on quality when the image is output onto media, (the finished print).

The best way to unravel the myth would be my means of some examples...

O.K. so the effect is quite subtle in this image. I took this image with my mobile studio lighting & created the image with careful exposure control.
The result being very little post image editing required.
To be more precise I only adjusted the contrast & colour balance & darkened the bottom of the image for effect...

O.K. the effect is more pronounced on this image. Evan though the originall raw file fell within the ideal range on the camera histogram I felt the image was a little dark.
I first corrected the exposure & then turned my attention to the colour balance. As the image was taken in the shade I had to increase the colour temperature of the original raw file. I also tweeked the contrast, in fact I have my own default contrast settings in photoshop & I rarely have to change these...

O.K. A little more extreme this time. As we all know the weather in Blighty is a little disappointing at times & the sky's gray & drab.
In this image I've obviously added a more pleasing sky, the more observant of you will also notice the usual contrast & colour balance corrections too...
In this final image lets step it up a little. Due to the exposure difference of the tower & the image of the bride I had no option but to set my camera on a tripod & blend the two images in photoshop. I also added a third image for the stars in the sky.
Before blending the images the usual contrast & colour balance corrections have been made which then just leaves the magic to happen...

To end this post I think it would be worthwhile mentioning RAW Files. All my images are taken & stored as RAW Files, these are basically RAW Image Data.
Raw Files can be edited non destructively as the original data is always there. Any edited images are stored separately as Tiff files(these can be re-edited if needed) & finally out put as j-pegs. J-pegs are basically final output files & shouldn't be edited.

I hope you've enjoyed this little post & maybe evan learn't a few tricks for your own image collections.
